Doug Haynes

DoughDoug Haynes is a Los Angeles-based writer who focuses on various topics but has his take on affordable housing and sustainable living. Doug is the president of The Council, a nonprofit organization that fights for the rights and opportunities of all people in urban Los Angeles neighborhoods. He s diverse background is quintessential for understanding how complex communities are impacted when communities are underrepresented.

Doug Haynes has been active in the nonprofit sector and community organizing for over 14 years. He has led campaigns that have built affordable housing, eliminated predatory lending, and brought social services to communities that have been disenfranchised by gentrification and systemic inequality. Doug also serves on the Los Angeles Affordable Housing Committee for the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development. He is also the co-founder of Project: HOME, an affordable housing nonprofit that works to provide the resources to stabilize neighborhoods and empower the people of these communities.

Doug has received many awards from various groups, including The United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC), the Tree-Free Council (TFC), and LA Beautiful. He was a National Champion in 2010 as part of the Urban Policy Forum. Doug was also recognized as a Los Angeles Rising Star in 2010 by the United Community Housing Coalition. In addition, the Council won the TFC’s Best Advocacy for Change Award in 2007 and 2008.

Doug has worked to make investments in the community that create social and economic stability and provides a foundation for people to thrive. Doug has served on the Board of Directors for an affordable housing nonprofit in Los Angeles and on the board for an affordable housing nonprofit in San Francisco.

Doug’s goals are to promote transparency, accountability, and collaboration with local government to ensure that communities have resources to build healthy and sustainable communities. The Council is working to provide services that allow people to become owners of their communities and sustainably improve their neighborhoods.
