How Podcaster Greg Soros Blends Music School Skills With Podcasting

Long before he was running his own production company, Greg Soros podcaster studied music at Berklee College of Music, training that still shows up in how he approaches podcast sound. That background, combined with years spent working inside major podcasting studios, forms the technical foundation behind Podcraft Media Lab, the Austin company Greg Soros founded and now uses as a base for mentoring newer podcasters. It is a rare case of a working podcaster building a curriculum out of his own career.

Where The Training Comes From

Most podcast mentorship programs stop at the microphone. Soros built his around a wider curriculum, one that pairs music school fundamentals with lessons learned from working alongside established shows. Mentees study narrative structure and sound design the way a producer would, then move into subjects a typical audio course skips entirely, including monetization strategy and how to grow an audience from nothing.

A Curriculum That Covers The Business Side Too

That second half of the curriculum matters as much to Greg Soros as the technical training. He has said that many mentorship programs focus almost entirely on creative development, leaving out how a podcaster actually earns a living. Podcraft Media Lab‘s approach instead walks mentees through pitching advertisers, negotiating distribution agreements, and building revenue models that can support a show over years rather than months.

The mentorship runs through a partnership with the Podcast Academy’s diversity fellowship program, which connects Soros with emerging creators from communities that have historically had limited access to premium production resources. Several of those mentees have since landed distribution deals, and three shows tied to the program reached six figure download numbers within their first year.

For Soros, the music school training and studio experience were never meant to stay locked inside his own catalog of client work. Passing that knowledge along, he suggests, is what separates a production company from one that also functions as a training ground for the next generation of podcasters entering an increasingly crowded field.
