Not all chief executive roles look alike, according to Michael Polk Newell Brands former leader, who has spent more than 40 years running companies large and small, says the differences between public and private leadership are far greater than most people assume.
Running the Show at a Public Giant
Polk’s career includes senior roles at Kraft, Unilever, and Newell Brands, some of the largest names in consumer goods. He describes public company leadership as work built around delegation and resource allocation tied to a broader corporate plan. Much of his time also went toward shareholders. “As a CEO of a public company, I was certainly spending thirty percent of my time with investors and with the public markets,” Polk says, adding that quarterly reporting requirements forced constant balancing between short term results and long term vision.
A Hands-On Second Act
In 2019, Michael Polk came out of retirement to lead Implus, a company owned by private equity. The new position required a much more direct style of leadership. Polk now works alongside the marketing and commercial teams on selling systems and go-to-market programs, describing the experience as “a back-to-the-future experience” reminiscent of earlier years in his career. He also notes that his current team, while driven, tends to be younger and less experienced, meaning he has to model the behaviors he wants to see rather than simply delegate them.
Private ownership, Polk explains, comes with fewer short term performance demands than public markets, since owners generally focus on the company’s long term development. That difference, he says, creates space for bigger, bolder decisions.
Even so, Polk maintains that a handful of leadership qualities matter no matter the setting. Accessibility, authenticity, and sharp decision making define successful leaders, in his view, whether they run a public giant or a private upstart. For Michael Polk, the goal has always been the same: build lasting value for the business and the people in it. Read this article for additional information.
