Surgery accounts for only part of how Dr. Andrew Jacono has supported survivors of domestic violence. For nine consecutive years, the dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon chaired ABOUT FACE: MAKING CHANGES, an annual benefit dedicated to raising funds and awareness for survivors rebuilding their lives after abuse.
A Different Kind of Commitment
Chairing a benefit for nearly a decade requires a different set of skills than performing reconstructive surgery, and the sustained role sets Dr. Andrew Jacono‘s involvement apart from a single donation or one-time appearance. Year after year, the event brought together supporters willing to fund the kind of care his own practice was already providing through the FACE TO FACE project, where more than 100 survivors have received facial reconstructions at no cost. The benefit gave that clinical work a financial engine and a public face beyond the operating room.
Connecting Fundraising to the Operating Table
The proceeds and awareness generated by ABOUT FACE: MAKING CHANGES supported a mission that Dr. Jacono had already been pursuing through direct patient care and his role as senior advisor to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His involvement with the benefit ran alongside the years that produced a Good Guy Award from the Center for the Women of New York and a formal commendation from U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy in the Congressional Record. Together, the surgery, the benefit and the recognition point to a consistent focus rather than isolated gestures spread across different causes.
Dr. Andrew Jacono has since extended his fundraising efforts into other forms, including mountain climbs undertaken specifically to support domestic violence victims and children awaiting surgery abroad. But ABOUT FACE: MAKING CHANGES remains one of the clearest examples of how he paired hands-on reconstructive work with the organizational effort needed to keep that work funded, a role he held for nearly a decade before stepping back from the chair position.
