Justin Nelson of JP Morgan Rethinks Neurodiverse Hiring

Financial firms are missing out on skilled workers by overlooking neurodiverse candidates, according to Justin Nelson, Managing Director at JP Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut. Nelson heads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team, a group responsible for more than $15 billion in client assets. He believes his industry needs a new approach to bringing autistic professionals into the workforce, drawing on both his career and personal insight into the obstacles these candidates encounter.

Nelson points to communication as the primary barrier for neurodiverse job seekers. “For neurodiverse candidates, the biggest challenge is typically communication, their ability to interact with people,” he says, noting that ordinary conversation can prove difficult even though it comes naturally to most colleagues.

Building Better Processes

Despite that hurdle, Justin Nelson JP Morgan stresses that many neurodiverse candidates bring abilities that traditional interviews fail to capture. He describes some as capable of remarkable creative and computational work, skills that exceed typical performance levels. Firms that rely solely on conventional interview formats often lose access to that talent before it can be properly evaluated.

To manage neurodiverse employees well, Nelson recommends breaking projects into clearly defined tasks rather than handing out broad assignments. Workers need to understand exactly how each piece connects to the bigger picture, he explains, since precision within a defined structure often becomes a genuine strength.

Nelson also works with organizations dedicated to this cause, including Adelphi University’s Bridges Program and the nonprofit Broad Futures, which pairs neurodiverse candidates with willing employers. These groups help companies get educated and prepare internal programs for identifying strong hires.

The move from school to the workplace, Nelson notes, remains the hardest step for many neurodiverse individuals. He argues that financial services firms can unlock valuable talent simply by adjusting how they interview and manage new hires, an investment that costs little but pays off through more capable teams.
