When Unilever recruited Michael Polk away from Kraft Foods in 2003, few could have predicted how far his career at the consumer goods giant would go. He started by leading the company’s USA Foods business, quickly establishing himself as a capable operator within one of the world’s largest food and personal care companies.
Michael Polk leadership caught the attention of Unilever’s senior ranks, and by 2006 Polk was named president of the Americas, a role he held until 2010. In that position, he was responsible for every Unilever brand and operation across both North America and Latin America.
The One Unilever Model
During his tenure as Americas president, Polk implemented what became known internally as the One Unilever operating model. The approach strengthened commercial execution across the region, helping accelerate growth while also improving operating margins, a rare combination in a business as large and complex as Unilever’s American operations.
Following that success, Michael Polk Newell Brands was promoted again in 2010, this time to president of Global Food, Home & Personal Care at Unilever’s headquarters in London. In that global role, he oversaw category strategies and innovation efforts across the company’s entire portfolio until 2011.
A Foothold on the Board
Polk’s impact at Unilever extended beyond his day job. In 2009, his leadership earned him a seat on the board of directors at Newell Rubbermaid, a connection that would soon reshape the trajectory of his career entirely.
By 2011, Newell Rubbermaid asked Michael Polk to leave Unilever and become the company’s president and CEO, a move that would define the next chapter of his professional life. His years at Unilever, spanning food, home care, and personal care brands across multiple continents, gave him the breadth of experience needed to lead a company of Newell’s size and complexity.
